CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Two police officers survived "by the grace of God" when a man who had just shot his roommate opened fire on cops in a Prospect Lefferts Gardens apartment on Sunday, police said.

Police revealed video Monday afternoon of the moment Abdur Rashid Ridhwaan, 44, took out a revolver as police officers filed up the stairs to his Hawthorne Street apartment, where someone had just called 911 about a man being shot, NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said.

Ridhwaan exchanged gunfire with the cops as they retreated down the stairs, hitting one officer in his leg and lodging a bullet in another cop's body camera and bullet-proof vest, according to police.

"This incident could have been a lot worse," Harrison said at a press conference. "By the grace of God, our heroic officers will be going home."

Ridhwaan, who barricaded himself in the apartment after shooting at the cops, was not hit during the exchange, police said.

Police safely got Ridhwaan and his roommate, who had been shot in both legs, out of the apartment after calling a hostage negotiation team to the building, Harrison said.

Ridhwaan was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful imprisonment.

His roommate is in stable condition at the hospital, according to police.

Police found three guns, including the revolver used to shoot at police, inside the apartment, Harrison said.
