BROOKLYN, NY — Subway upgrades coming near the Barclays Center-Atlantic Avenue transit hub will change service on three subway lines throughout October, the MTA has announced.

D, N and R trains between Manhattan and Brooklyn and within a stretch on Brooklyn's Fourth Avenue will be replaced with shuttles on three weekends in October as construction crews replace switches just north of the Atlantic Avenue station.

The work will replace old switches, used to divert trains, with new ones so that trains can continue to run smoothly on the three lines, transit officials said.

"Switches are some of the most important pieces of equipment in the subway system," the MTA wrote. "...But like everything else, they wear down over time. By proactively replacing switches, we can avoid much bigger problems in the near future."

The switch replacement will mean shutting down trains between Atlantic Avenue and 36th Street so the construction crews can have uninterrupted access to the track.

The crews are scheduled to work from 9:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday on the weekends of Oct. 9, Oct. 16 and Oct. 23.

During those weekends, D, N and R trains will be replaced by a shuttle buses between Atlantic Avenue and 36th Street station.

A shuttle will also be available in Manhattan between Broadway-Lafayette Street and Grand Street to help straphangers get to Brooklyn. D and R trains won't run between Brooklyn and Manhattan during the construction weekends.

Here's a full run-down of the changes, according to the MTA:

  • D trains run in two sections: Between 205 St (Bronx) and 34 St-Herald Sq (Manhattan)
  • Between 9 Av and Stillwell Av (Brooklyn)
  • A shuttle bus replaces D service between Broadway-Lafayette Sts and Grand St (Manhattan)

R trains run in two sections:

  • Between 71 Av and Whitehall St (Queens to Lower Manhattan)
