Brooklyn Hosts West Indian Day Parade Monday 9/5: Events Start Thursday 9/1

The 49th annual West Indian Day Parade is Monday, Sept. 5. However, the pre-festivities begin at the Brooklyn Museum this Thursday, Sept. 1.

BROOKLYN, NY — Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights will soon bristle with bright colors, giant floats, elaborate costumes and Caribbean cheer for the 2016 New York Caribbean Carnival Parade on Sept. 5.

But there's lots to enjoy before the finale: Carnival-related events kick off this Thursday night, Sept. 1, at the Brooklyn Museum.

Organized by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA), the five-day celebration pays tribute to the Jamaican and Dominican cultures, and those of neighboring islands, that help make central Brooklyn a vibrant place.
