'Cars Kill Kids:' Sign Hacks Continue After 10-Year-Old's Death

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — A spate of digital street sign hackings left drivers with a grim message to consider two days after 10-year-old Dalerjon Shahobiddinov was fatally struck by a licenseless driver: "Cars kill kids."

Anti-car street sign hackers again coopted a large digital street sign on Vanderbilt Avenue between Park and Sterling places Monday morning, according to photos taken by a local resident.

The messages — which come two days after 10-year-old Dalerjon Shahobiddinov was hit riding his bike by a driver who now faces criminal charges — called cars "death machines" that "ruin cities" and "melt glaciers."

"Get rid of your car," the sign urged. "Honking won't help."

This is the third reported hack attack on a digital sign. Hackers loaded their own message onto a Park Slope sign Mondayand this Vanderbilt Avenue sign on Thursday.

With Dalerjon's death, the number of cyclists to be killed in city streets in 2019 rose to 24.

Four of those cyclists will never see their 18th birthdays.
