BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — Crown Heights and Prospect Heights don't just share part of a name — starting Saturday the park-adjacent neighborhoods will have a combined one mile of foot- and bicycle-only streets.

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday announced 13 more miles of roads will be added to the city's "Open Streets" program.

Those include the following stretches in Crown Heights:

And these sections of Prospect Heights:

- Underhill Avenue from St. Johns Place to Bergen Street - 0.32 miles

- Carlton Avenue from Park Place to Bergen Street - 0.18 miles

- Lincoln Place from Washington Street to Bedford Avenue - 0.41 miles

The closures — or openings, depending on your perspective — beginning Saturday are meant to give New Yorkers more space to socially distance and exercise during the coronavirus pandemic.

The mayor's office claimed in a Friday news release that the additional streets bring the city past its goal of opening 40 miles of streets by the end of May. It's an arguable point because the city's tally includes nine miles of temporary protected bike lanes announced last week.

Not including those lanes and their streets, the newly-announced locations bring the citywide total to only 34 miles.

Open Streets across New York City can be seen on Google Maps or this city list.
