Crown Heights Eatery Gets $20K Grant, Help With Reopening

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — A Crown Heights eatery is among the 20 New York City restaurateurs that will get help rebounding from the coronavirus crisis from Door Dash, the company announced.

Savvy Bistro and Bar, a Caribbean restaurant on Nostrand Avenue, was among several Brooklyn restaurants chosen for Door Dash's Main Street Strong Accelerator program, which will give grants and support to restaurants owned by women, immigrants or people of color who were disproportionately impacted in the pandemic.

“COVID-19 has threatened the survival of so many small businesses, and restaurants have been among the hardest hit by the ongoing pandemic,” Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce CPO Samara Karasyk said in Door Dash's release. “It’s great to see DoorDash supporting New York’s entrepreneurs and providing historically underserved communities with capital and resources so that our communities can rebuild from this crisis.”

The accelerator program was created with Accion Opportunity Fund, a nonprofit small business lender and support organization.

The entrepreneurs chosen will get a $20,000 grant and participate in an eight-week restaurant operator course, including hands-on mentorship and small business advising, Door Dash said.

"Participants were selected because they have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to their communities and shared a clear, actionable plan of how they’d use the resources from this program," the company wrote.
