Crown Heights Fire Breaks Out Across The Street From Planned Homeless Shelter
Here's the cause of all the smoke and sirens Friday afternoon near Rogers and Crown.
CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — A fire broke out around 3:45 p.m. Friday in the first floor of 240 Crown St. — a big, brick apartment building right across the street from the city's controversial new homeless shelter site at Rogers Avenue and Crown Street.
At least 50 firefighters initially responded to the fire, according to the FDNY. It was still burning out of control as of 4:25 p.m.

No injuries were immediately reported as a result of the fire, an FDNY spokeswoman said. She could not provide any additional details about the extent of the damage at 240 Crown.

The six-story apartment building that caught fire Friday contains 135 total units, according to StreetEasy. The building is currently undergoing renovations, and city records show a couple different 311 complaints were lodged within the past few weeks, re: haphazard construction practices.
