Hip-Hop Festival Event Coming To Crown Heights

It will include speeches from more than 30 cultural leaders.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is bring cultural leaders to Medgar Evers College July 12th.

The panel will take place between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. in Medgar Evers College's English Department at 1650 Bedford Avenue. The event will feature more than 30 speakers.

The day will begin with opening remarks from the keynote speaker Linda Sarsour, a Palestinian-American political activist. The full list of talks is below.

Community Engagement and Activism In The Age Of Hip-Hop - 11.15 a.m. to 12 p.m.

A discussion of community activists on how to build initiatives locally and nationally. Speakers Richard Green, Chris Wise and Adama Delphine Fawundu will share their experiences.

"Preserving The Legacy" - 12.15 p.m. to 1.00 p.m.

Timothy Anne Burnside, Museum Specialist in Curatorial Affairs at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, will join guests for a conversation on how the NMAAHC collection was put together. As hip-hop is the most prominently featured music genre in the collection, Burnside will talk about the importance of documenting its evolution.

Hip-Hop Journalism - 1.15 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Jerry Barrow will lead a discussion on how the medium of journalism is changing and what one can do to adapt to a digital setting.

The Women's March On Washington and Activism in the Hip-Hop Age - 3.15 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The organizer of the Women's March On Washington, Ginny Suss, will talk about how the march was organized and how hip-hop played a role in it. Panelists include Toshi Reagon, Janaye Ingram, Ginny Suss and Paola Mendoza.

The New Industry: The Impact Of Streaming On Hip-Hop In The Digital Age - 4.15 p.m. – 5 p.m.

The Recording Academy, the organization behind the GRAMMY awards, will be hosting an informative talk about the academy's New York chapter, voting requirements, submission process, digital and streaming rules. The talk will also highlight the changes in hip-hop in the age of music streaming.

Fashion #fortheculture - 5.15 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Designer April Walker and stylist Misa Hylton will be talking about how hip-hop has influenced fashion through the years and what fashion brands can do to stay relevant.
