Mitchell's Soul Food Shuttered By Health Department
Inspectors closed Mitchell's on Thursday after reporting evidence of mice and vermin-conducive conditions, city records show.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Mitchell’s Soul Food was shut down after health inspectors reported live mice in the restaurant Thursday, city records show.
The Department of Health closed Mitchell's Soul Food — a neighbor mainstay at 617A Vanderbilt Ave. that has been in business for more than 40 years — after inspectors reported three major health code violations on Oct. 5.
Inspectors reported evidence of mice near the food areas, hot foods not being held at a safe temperature, and vermin-attracting conditions, city records show.

Restaurants are graded on a violation point system that determines their letter grades — scores between zero and 13 constitute an A, scores between 14 and 27 constitute a B, and scores above 28 earn eateries a C and close monitoring from the city’s health department.
During its Thursday inspection, the Prospect Heights restaurant earned 40 points — 13 points more than it earned during an inspection last October.

Mitchell’s Soul Food has won distinctions from the Village Voice, Eater, and CBS New York, among others, for its crispy fried chicken, homey atmosphere and low prices.
No one answered the telephone when Patch called Mitchell's on Monday morning. The restaurant is normally closed for business on Mondays and Tuesdays.
