'Mobil Soup Kitchen' Traveling Around BK To Stop In Crown Heights

A food truck with free hot meals that is traveling throughout Brooklyn this month will stop at a Crown Heights church on Saturday.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — A traveling soup kitchen making its way through Brooklyn will stop in Crown Heights this weekend.

The Wide Awakes Mobil Soup Kitchen — a mutual aid project focused on Wide Awakes collective — will stop at the Church of Praise and Worship God In Christ in the Weeksville section of Crown Heights on Saturday, Feb. 20.

The food truck will hand out free hot meals to local communities on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:30 a.m.

The stop is part of a four-week project where the soup kitchen will travel to a different Brooklyn neighborhood each Saturday. The project, which includes a partnership with the Brooklyn Museum, started Feb. 13 with a stop in Bay Ridge.

After Weeksville, it will head to Bed-Stuy, and then Brownsville.

The soup kitchen is among several projects that are addressing food insecurity in Brooklyn.

Kings County — which already had 14 percent of its residents struggling to find food before the pandemic — was projected to reach 20 percent food insecurity in 2020.
