Park Slope Anti-Trump Rally Planned Outside Sen. Chuck Schumer's House

Political activists warn the senator: "Play ball with dangerous, amoral people and we will devote ourselves to your political demise."

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Brooklynites determined to stop President-Elect Donald Trump's agenda in its tracks will deliver their message to New York Senator and Park Slope resident Chuck Schumer on Jan. 7.

A rally planned for 1 p.m. outside Schumer's 9 Prospect Park West apartment building had been signed up for on Facebook by 169 people as of Thursday afternoon, with nearly 300 more saying they were interested in attending.

"We, the people of NYC and New York State, vow to hound you day and night if you give so much as ONE INCH to Trump, congressional Republicans and their greed- and hate-filled, corporation-loving, civil-rights-hating agenda," the Facebook event posting explains.

"We think this administration is disgusting," demonstration organizer Tim Murphy told Patch on Thursday, referring to the incoming Trump administration. "We don't think it's legitimate. We think it's extreme, it's unstable, it has courted hate crimes. And we want to see the Democratic leadership obstruct them 100 percent."

In his first Senate floor speech as Minority Leader, Schumer expressed a willingness to work with Trump and Republicans, so long as Democrats agreed with their legislative proposals.

"There are those who suggest that our baseline posture should be to work with the President-Elect and have him pass his whole agenda," Schumer said. "But it is not our job to be a rubber stamp. If the President-Elect proposes legislation...on issues like infrastructure and trade and closing the carried interest loophole, for instance, we'll work in good faith to perfect and potentially enact it. But when he doesn't we will resist."

But Murphy, a journalist, activist, and novelist who said he lives in Prospect Heights, took a different approach.

"We want his reign to be as short as possible," Murphy said, referring to Trump, "and we don't want him to get a crumb or trophy to crow about."

That means Democrats should oppose everything Trump does, he continued, with the goal of making him a one term president.

"We insist that you block this [agenda] 100 percent, or we will try to Tea Party you, try to primary you," he said.

Asked what he'd say to the nearly 63 million Americans who voted for Trump, and who presumably support at least some part of his agenda, Murphy said, "Too bad. It's our turn to obstruct."

Murphy said the rally's other message for Schumer is that his constituents will reward him and support him if he blocks Trump's actions.

The organizer said he hopes other demonstrations will deliver the same message to additional members of New York's congressional delegation.
