BROOKLYN, NY — A new mural at the Brooklyn College subway station will carry on the legacy of an MTA train operator who was tragically killed in an arson attack last year.

Joined by his family on Monday, transit officials unveiled a mural and plaque celebrating Garrett Goble, who was found unconscious on the tracks after helping riders flee a fire at the Central Park North–110th Street station last March.

The newly-unveiled mural comes several months after transit officials first announced they would dedicate the station to Goble, who grew up in Brooklyn.

"Garrett grew up coming to this station and I can think of no tribute more befitting of his legacy than this mural," Delilah Goble, his wife, said Monday. "The pain of losing him will never fully go away, but I take comfort in knowing that the thousands of New Yorkers who come through this station each and every day will be greeted by his smiling face. This is a beautiful memorial."

Goble, a father of two, was operating a train around 3 a.m. on March 27, 2020 when an arsonist set fire to a shopping cart at the 110th Street station, engulfing the train in flames, officials said. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital after the fire.

More than a dozen customers were also injured during the blaze, officials said.

The eight-foot-long Brooklyn mural features a portrait of Goble crafted by Brooklyn artist BK Foxx using acrylic paint and spray.

"Today's unveiling brings both continuing sorrow, but also great joy," said New York City Transit Interim President Sarah Feinberg. "Nothing will ever bring true solace to Garrett’s family, friends, colleagues and loved ones, but this beautiful mural is an important and lasting tribute to his service to New York, his colleagues, and the riders whose lives he saved.”
