’69 Met Art Shamsky to Share “Miracle Mets” Highlights at April
Cradle of Aviation Hosts Book Signing of Superstar Outfielder Whose Team Went from Last to First in the Summer of '69
1969 was an incredible year for space and for baseball as Americans watched heroes emerge on the moon and on the field. The Cradle of Aviation Museum is proud to host Art Shamsky, superstar right fielder for the NY Mets, who will be signing copies of his latest book, After the Miracle: The Lasting Brotherhood of the ’69 Mets on Tuesday, April 9th at 7pm at the museum. The book is an inside account of an iconic team in baseball history: the 1969 New York Mets—a consistently last-place team that turned it all around in just one season told by Art, Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver, and other teammates as they reminisce about what happened then and where they are today.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Art was a professional baseball player for thirteen years starting his illustrious career with the Cincinnati Reds in 1960. He was traded to the New York Mets in the winter of 1967 and was a major part of the ‘Miracle Mets’ that won the 1969 World Championship defeating the Baltimore Orioles. During the championship season, Art batted .300 and led the Mets in the National League Playoffs batting .537 vs. the Atlanta Braves with seven hits in thirteen at-bats. The popularity of the 1969 Mets is everlasting and Art maintains, “There isn’t a day that goes by that someone doesn’t want to talk to me about the 1969 Mets.”
Books are available for sale at the museum store. For more information call (516) 572-4111 or visit www.cradleofaviation.org.
