Community Rallies to Save the Janta House
Community rallies to urge the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission to landmark the Janta Home in Elmhurst.

Community residents and advocates, joined by New York State Assembly Member Catalina Cruz and community leader Alfonso Quiroz, rallied on Sunday, to urge the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to landmark the Janta Home in Elmhurst.
The former owner, Walentyna Janta, worked for the Polish government-in-exile during WW2. She translated documents, from Polish to English that exposed the Nazi atrocities at the Warsaw Ghetto and concentration camps. In the 1960s to 2000s, she and her husband used the home as a hub for Polish writers, artists and political leaders. Mrs. Janta died at the age of 107 in April 2020. The home was sold to a developer who plans to demolish the home and construct an apartment building.
