Flight Delays At LaGuardia, JFK, Newark Airports Caused By Storms Across U.S. (UPDATES)

Hours-long flight delays were reported at all three New York City-area airports Monday.

QUEENS, NY — Cranky weather across much of the country Monday afternoon was causing widespread flight delays in and out of LaGuardia, JFK and Newark airports, according to federal flight officials.

By 7 p.m. Monday evening, incoming and outgoing flight delays were stretching from one to three hours at JFK and LaGuardia in Queens, the FAA said online. And the situation was even worse at Newark Airport in New Jersey, where officials said delays were lasting up to three-and-a-half hours.

Although no major storm systems had moved into the NYC area by early Monday evening, the FAA was blaming local flight delays on "weather/thunderstorms."

Around 450 flights were delayed Monday at JFK, along with more than 300 flights at LaGuardia and nearly 400 flights at Newark, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware.

Government-issued storm and flood warnings were in effect for various regions across the U.S. on Monday evening — including a huge swath of the Midwest, areas surrounding the Great Lakes and parts of upstate New York.

And there's still about a 20 percent chance that thunderstorms could hit NYC later Monday night, according to federal weather officials.
