Happy Birthday, Spider-Man! NYC Icon Turns 55

NEW YORK CITY, NY – Happy birthday, Spider-Man!

The New York City icon entered the comic book world and the U.S. collective consciousness 55 years ago Thursday.

Spider-Man debuted in “Amazing Fantasy” No. 15 in 1962. The comic cost just 12 cents at the time, though it fetched a whopping $454,100 at auction last year.

The cover showed the hero swinging from a New York rooftop and proclaiming, “Though the world may mock Peter Parker, the timid teen-ager… it will soon marvel at the awesome might of… Spider-Man!"

The character went on to have countless adventures, many of them set in Queens and the rest of the city. Recent years have seen at least three movie versions of the hero, the latest being Tom Holland’s depiction in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
