JFK And LaGuardia Closed, Newark Flights Canceled As Storm Hits

The nor'easter closed down LaGuardia Airport and suspended about a quarter of the flights coming into JFK and Newark on Friday.

QUEENS, NY -- If you're traveling this weekend, you may want to check your plane's status before heading into the rain - All flights at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports and hundreds more at Newark International Liberty Airport were canceled on Friday in preparation for Winter Storm Riley.

The powerful coastal storm is slated to bring a ferocious mixture of extreme winds and heavy downpours.

By Friday afternoon, the Federal Aviation Administration halted all flights into JFK and LaGuardia suspended all flights to and from its airport because of the storm's heavy winds. A quarter of the scheduled flights at Newark the airport were canceled due to the weather.

Newark also suspended its Air Train services at 11:30 a.m. on Friday and replaced them with shuttle busses in preparation for the storm's high winds. The New Jersey airport advised flyers to plan for longer airport commutes.

Flight cancellations in preparation for Winter Storm Riley began early Friday morning at all three airports. LaGuardia reported more than 400 flights cancelled, JFK counted more than 250, and Newark more than 260. All airports advised flyers to check their flight status before leaving.
