Tornado Hits NYC, Downs 50 Trees And Power Lines In Path

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down in Queens.

QUEENS, NY – A tornado touched down in Queens Thursday night, knocking down trees, downing power lines and ripping the siding of homes in a three quarter mile path of destruction, officials said Friday.

The storm ripped through College Point, near the St Fidelis Catholic Church, at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Estimated winds of 85 mph caused havoc in the area.

The service said the storm came through about 10:30 p.m. Thursday and moved a path 100 yards wide.

"The tornado strengthened as it moved toward Powell's Cove Park, where at least 50 trees were downed."

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Queens, the Bronx and northern Nassau County at 10:20 p.m. that lasted for about 20 minutes Thursday. It told people to take cover urgently.

Trees downed from the storm were also spotted in Jackson Heights, Twitter users said.

The National Weather Service said surveyors will be inspecting the area on Friday.
