Queens Museum Closes After U.S. Open Security Hinders Access

The museum cited extra security in the area needed for the tournament.

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Queens Museum is shutting because extra security needed in the area during the neighboring U.S. Open makes it impossible to operate, it announced this week. It's the second year in a row that the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park center temporarily shut down during the tennis tournament which ends Sept. 10.

"As many of you may know, the Museum is located only a few hundred feet from the US Open. Due to the heightened security for the tennis tournament, access to the Museum is affected," the museum stated.

"We apologize for the inconvenience and will use this downtime to install an exciting season of exhibitions."

Hundreds of NYPD officers are on hand for the U.S. Open, which is also seeing concrete barriers and special bomb detection scanners for this first time this year, according to amNew York.
