BAYPORT, NY — Three teenage boys were credited with saving the life of a driver who was found unconscious in Bayport last month.

On Sept. 12, the 15-year-old Bayport boys were riding their bikes when they found the car, still running, in the middle of Purick Street. When they approached the car, they found the driver unconscious at the wheel and tried to wake him up. When they couldn't wake him up, the boys called 911 and stayed with the man until first responders arrived.

Members of the Bayport Fire Department then determined that the driver had suffered a near deadly overdose and gave him two rounds of Narcan, which revived him.

During the month of September, the town launched the Islip Goes Purple campaign in order to increase the awareness of the dangers of opioid and heroin use. According to the CDC, there were over 70,000 opioid and heroin overdose deaths last year, more than any year in history.

"These boys saved a life and by doing so, they have brought more awareness to this problem, and we are so grateful," MaryAnn Pfeiffer, Co-Chair, Town of Islip Opioid/Heroin Task Force said.

Officials also presented the three teens with Town of Islip Citations for their heroic action.

"As a mom and as a Blue Point resident, I am so proud of them," Mary Kate Mullen, Councilwoman and Town Board Liaison, Opioid/Heroin Task Force said. "This is an epidemic and this year has been the worst ever. We need to have more boys react like these three, and we need to end this epidemic."
