OAKDALE, NY — An Oakdale woman was charged with animal cruelty Wednesday after dead dogs were found in her home, the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.

Officials said Donna Hulse, 68, had four dead dogs, four live dogs and a cat living in "deplorable" conditions in her Jade Street home. The Islip Town fire marshal declared the residence uninhabitable.

Neighbors made numerous complaints about the home to the SPCA and Suffolk police, saying there were dead animals inside and a strong smell of urine and feces.

Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross said when SPCA officers went to the home, their view was blocked because the windows had been covered from the inside and Hulse refused to allow them inside to inspect the premises.

That changed on Wednesday when Hulse allowed SPCA detectives and the police to enter.

Hulse signed over the live pets to the Islip Animal Shelter, where they will be examined and evaluated for adoption. With the cooperation of Suffolk County police 5th precinct officers, Hulse was transported to the precinct for processing and will return to First District Court in Central Islip for arraignment Oct. 6.
