Long Island Weather: 6-To-9-Foot Waves To Slam Region As Coastal Storm Churns

Life-threatening rip currents and beach erosion likely as a nor'easter-type storm brings rain and wind. Watch live Long Island beach cams.

If you are headed to an ocean-facing Long Island beach Tuesday or Wednesday, it's pretty simple: stay out of the water. A coastal storm currently off the Carolinas will spawn life-threatening rip currents and beach erosion locally, the National Weather Service says.

A high surf advisory will be in effect from 8 p.m Tuesday until noon Wednesday. Waves of 6-9 feet will cause some localized dune erosion during times of high tide. Wind and/or wave conditions will support the development of very strong rip currents.

"These rip currents will be life-threatening to anyone who enters the surf," the NWS says.
