There is a proposal for a fast food restaurant at the northeast corner of the Bayport Avenue and Montauk Highway intersection (presently a closed Citi Bank). The Bayport Avenue crossing is a main thoroughfare for automobile and pedestrians (our children) to access three public schools. The schools include to the north, Sylvan Elementary, James Wilson Young Middle and to the south Bayport-Blue Point High School. There is limited bus service, so many parents drive the students to the schools and many students walk to and from schools here. Bayport Avenue is the only cross street with a traffic light, so most people use this crossing.
It is of great concern that a high traffic business like a fast food restaurant will increase the dangers for both children on foot and their parents in cars traveling to and from our schools. The photo shows Bayport Avenue on a recent school day morning. A much better use for this property would be a professional enterprise with low traffic impact which would be a much better and safer fit for this location. Some businesses to consider would be real estate, doctors, accounting, financial advisor, veterinarian, etc.
Please attend the Town of Islip meeting on Thursday, September 20 at 6:30 PM to have your voice heard on this change of zoning proposal. If you don’t act now, you will have to live with this potentially dangerous traffic situation from now on,
