GoFundMe Started To Help Newlyweds Who Lost Home In Fire

The couple had just purchased a new home when the devastating fire broke out. A local fundraiser was started to help the couple rebuild.

SAYVILLE, NY — A fundraiser was created to help support a Sayville newlywed couple who lost their home in a devastating fire last month.

On March 28, the blaze broke out at the home on Overton Avenue. Over 50 Sayville volunteer firefighters worked to battle the fire in the two-story home. While putting out the fire, half of the living room floor collapsed suddenly, sending one firefighter fully and another partially into the basement.

The two firefighters managed to escape with minor injuries and the blaze was put out within an hour. While the residents weren't home at the time and therefore, uninjured, in the fire, the home was significantly damaged.

This week, East Patchogue resident Danielle Cervini created a GoFundMe to help the homeowners, Kelvin and Meg Moreno, who were supposed to move into their newly purchased home before the fire.

"Luckily Kelvin, Meg, and their dog were not in the home but some of their possessions were, including all of Meg's clothing," Cervini wrote. "Meg and Kelvin overcame every obstacle thrown at them in 2020, from canceling and changing their wedding plans, late nights for Meg working as an emergency room nurse, and long days for Kelvin as a chef. They never complained as they navigated the year with new restrictions as essential employees, first-time home buyers, and while planning their wedding."

Cervini started the fundraiser with a goal of raising $10,000 to help the family. In just two days, the page has raised a total of $3,250.

"These newlyweds deserve a happy ending," Cervini wrote on the page. "On behalf of Kelvin and Meg's work family at Blackbirds, we would like to ask for your help to alleviate any short-term financial stress for them by contributing to help them plan their next chapter and rebuild their home."
