LI Storm Update: The Latest Snow Total Estimates, Timeline

LONG ISLAND, NY — A fast-moving storm is expected to drop a half-foot of snow on Long Island Sunday. A winter storm warning is in effect until 9 p.m.

Light snow began falling Sunday morning across the area and picked up in intensity as the afternoon neared. A band of heavy snow with snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour will hang around the island through the afternoon.

The snow will likely end by the time Super Bowl LIV kicks off in Tampa Bay at 6:30 p.m.

A total of 6-8 inches of accumulation is expected on Long Island.

Unless absolutely necessary, it would be wise to stay off the roads until Monday.

Monday will be dry, but cold with a high near 29 and wind chill temperatures dipping close to single digits. The Tuesday morning and evening commutes could be a mess with a mix of snow, rain and sleet falling on the island during the day. Snow and sleet accumulation is not expected to top a half-inch.
