More Than 100 Residents Attend Island Hills Protest Meeting

Greater Islip Association hosted an informational meeting for opponents of the Island Hills development plan.

SAYVILLE, NY —At least 150 residents attended a meeting to organize opposition to the Island Hills golf course development, a large residential complex planned by property owner Rechler Equity Partners. Opposition to the planned development has been ongoing since Rechler applied to the Town of Islip for a zone change in 2017. Civic group Greater Islip Association hosted this meeting at the Sayville library on February 29th to "spark energy in the community," says Milynn Augilis, who helped organize the event.

Augilis is the president of the association and she said the goals of the gathering included sending a message to the Town of Islip that "we are present and focused on no zone change." Concerned residents were encouraged to attend Town of Islip meetings and to also be part of our letter writing campaign."

"This group has become the model for other communities to take a stance against overdevelopment," and push for revitalization of existing empty retail space, Augulis added.
