SAYVILLE, NY — Matt Reagan, owner of new natural pet supply shop in Sayville, Purity Barn, turned an economic challenge of the coronavirus pandemic into an opportunity. Seeing his steel supply business lessen due to the pandemic, Reagan, a Sayville resident, decided to launch a business connected to his passions: dog rescue, nutrition and wellness.

Purity Barn opened Saturday at 66 Main St. The store carries organic, raw, and gently-cooked dog and cat food and products. Reagan and his partners on the project—Camille Lucy, Dallas Dear, Klea Papuli, Melanie Hippolito and his son Liam Reagan—are all involved in aspects of dog rescue, veterinary care and nutrition and came together to launch the passion project.

"We help people get better food into their dogs," Reagan said, adding he believes that directly impacts pet health and the rescue community. The storefront is also meant to serve as a central location for the pet community in Sayville and the surrounding towns, with dog walkers, sitters, pet information and more available for the community, he told Patch.

Reagan knew he wanted to open in Sayville.

"I love Sayville and when I saw the vacant storefront I knew I wanted to support this community and support dog owners here."

Reagan says many dog owners don't have access to crucial information that can keep their pets healthy, like the importance of moisture in their food and how less processed, more raw dog food is crucial.

"We knew it wouldn't work if it was cost-prohibitive," he said. Purity Barn has raw options at various price levels.

Purity Barn will also offer a subscription drop-off service for any customers who don't want to make physical trips to the store, and stress tests for dogs to determine possible nutritional needs.

"It's really just a matter of knowing a little bit more, and giving dog owners access to information. The food a lot of times is the key to unlocking the dog's health."
