Obit: John “Jack” W. Edwards, Ex-Sayville FD Captain, Dies At 84

The great-grandfather of three and Sayville native passed away on January 18.

SAYVILLE, NY — John “Jack” W. Edwards, a Sayville native and former Sayville Fire Department captain, died on January 18, 2020. He was 84.

Edwards was born January 27, 1935 in Sayville John R. and Anna (nee Lewis) Edwards. He married Bertha Grunden on April 5, 1956. He worked from 1952 to 1967 at the A&P Tea Company and left there to open a Stationary Business which he operated till 1972. He then worked as the Chief custodial engineer for the North Babylon School District from 1972 till retiring in 1992. During all his working years he also worked part time for the Sayville United Methodist Church.

Edwards was very active in his community as a member of the Sayville United Methodist Church from 1956 until his passing. He loved his church and was active in many positions in the church including as a Lay Leader. He was a lifetime member of the Community Ambulance Company and served as Secretary for 5 years. A lifetime member of the Resolute Hose Company and the Sayville Fire Department serving as Secretary for the department for 21 years and Captain of the Fire Police for 6 years.

He was also a lifetime member of the Sayville Historical Society and was a past president. Edwards was past president of the Association of Suffolk County Historical Societies and was involved with the Boy Scouts for 35 years, serving as Scoutmaster for 15 years.

He and his wife moved to Florida permanently in 1994 as residents of Buttonwood Village. He enjoyed collecting post cards, reading and volunteer work.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Edwards is survived by his children, George and Eileen Edwards of Bayport and Susan (Edwards) and Anthony Carbone of Sodus. In addition, he also leaves behind four grandchildren: Ruth Anne Carbone (Louis Dudley), Joy Love Edwards (Steven Katz), Nicholas Carbone and Jon-Anthony Carbone (Meghan Carbone) and 3 great-grandchildren.

There will be a funeral service in Sayville at a later date.
