Sayville High School Volleyball Girls Dig Deep for DIG PINK
Sayville Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball teams participated in the national effort for Breast Cancer Awareness.

“The girls and the gym were a sea of pink!” said Sayville Volleyball Coach Deb Urso about this year’s DIG PINK fundraiser event.
“Every player played her part in digging for a cure!”
With great determination both on and off the court, the Sayville Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball teams participated in the national effort for Breast Cancer Awareness, organized by The Side-Out Foundation and Suffolk County Girls Volleyball.
The Girls Volleyball has been bringing awareness and a sense of purpose in fighting Breast Cancer since 2008.
Coach Urso expressed great enthusiasm for different aspects of the fundraiser; from the traditional collaboration of running a DIG PINK, to scheduling matches during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but specifically for the growth each succeeding year of this High School Volleyball program throughout Suffolk County.
After ninth grader Emily Llewellyn opened with a powerful rendition of the national anthem, it was time to play.
“The game was such a great community event. All our parents and fans were so supportive. We had a great game against Shoreham Wading River.” Sayville won 3-0, and Urso added, “the win was a full-team effort.”
In addition, Sayville Volleyball held raffles (donated by parents and teachers), ran a bake sale (made by all the players and their families), sold shirts (designed by the SCVCA), and held a 50/50.
By the end of the event, Urso reported, “Collecting $900 from Girls Volleyball for Dig Pink, and with the generosity of Lois Malenczak (LI Sports and Rehab and former Volleyball parent) donating an extra $100, Sayville’s donation is now an even $1,000 for breast cancer!”
Also, extra congratulations to the Girls Varsity Volleyball team, not only for their fundraising efforts, but for being Co-League Champs for League 6 (with East Hampton) this year.
“It is the first time, since 1980, according to the banner in the gym!” Urso announced. “I am so proud of them!”
