Long Island Weather: Snow Expected On 1st 2 Days Of Spring

Snowfall estimates have been released for the first day of spring. Sigh.

Buckle up for a snowy first week of spring. We likely won't see nearly as much precipitation or the damaging winds that the three nor'easters to kick off March brought, but it certainly won't feel like spring.

The National Weather Service has issued the following hazardous weather outlook for the region:

The probability for widespread hazardous weather is uncertain, as a series of low pressure systems passing to the south bring chances of snow Tuesday into Wednesday. A slight northward trend in the expected track of either of these lows could lead to significant snowfall, especially for the New York City metropolitan area and Long Island.

A total of 1-3 inches of snow is expected to fall on the first day of spring Tuesday on the island.

"The last two nor’easters moved northeast up the coast and impacted the northern mid-Atlantic and New England," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll said. "The track of this storm is expected to be different and generally move from west to east across the mid-Atlantic."

The forecast is highly uncertain, though. The maps below show the odds of more than one, two and four inches of snow on Long Island.

"In order for roads and sidewalks to turn slippery from the mid-morning to mid-afternoon hours this time of year, snow must fall heavily to overcome the effects of the stronger March sun," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said. "Otherwise, these surfaces will remain wet as grassy and elevated surfaces turn white."

The maps above only show expected precipitation by Tuesday night, but another storm will likely bring additional snow Wednesday.

How close that storm tracks to the coast will determine whether storm-weary areas of New York and New England will merely get brushed by a little snow or contend with another high-impact snowstorm, according to AccuWeather. The NWS has not yet released any snow total estimates for Wednesday.
