Street Renaming Ceremony To Honor Hero Scheduled For Next Month

The event will take place in honor of Sgt. James P. Bast, a 9/11 first responder who passed away from cancer last year.

SAYVILLE, NY — A street renaming ceremony to honor a local hero who died of a 9/11-related illness last year will be held next month.

During the special event on April 6, Behrendt Court will be renamed for Sgt. James P. Bast. The Town of Islip will host the ceremony, with assistance from the NYPD Ceremonial Unit, starting at 10:30 a.m.

Bast, a 9/11-first responder, retired from the Intelligence Bureau's Municipal Security Section after 23 years in service and afterward worked as part of the security detail for former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

He passed away from cancer on Jan. 14, 2020.
