Swimming Prohibited At 4 Suffolk Beaches

Swimming was closed at the local beaches after officials found high levels of bacteria in the waters.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Four Suffolk County beaches were closed down to swimming on Thursday due to the finding of bacteria in excess of acceptable criteria. According to the Suffolk County Department of Health, Bayport Beach in Bayport, Sayville Marine Park Beach in Sayville, Amityville Village Beach in the Town of Babylon and Valley Grove Beach in Eatons Neck, are closed to swimming until further notice.

Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott said that bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have lowered to acceptable levels.

For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822 or contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 852-5760 during normal business hours. To view an interactive map of beach closures/advisories, visit: https://ny.healthinspections.us/ny_beaches/.
