Sylvan Avenue Elementary School Celebrates 'Smile Train Week'

The event raises money and awareness for international nonprofit Smile Train.

Press release from Bayport-Blue Point School District:

May 26, 2021

Spearheaded by school speech pathologists Christine Monahan and Laurie Katz, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently celebrated its annual “Smile Train Week” to raise money and awareness for Smile Train, an international nonprofit that supports surgery and other essential care for children with cleft lips and palates. A main component of the week’s programming was “Walk A Mile for a Smile,” an event in which the student body walked laps on school grounds to raise money for the organization. These fundraising efforts were also paired with daily dress-up days inspired by “things that make us smile,” such as “crazy hair day” and “how many smiles can you wear day.”
