Touch a Truck

Learning About First Responders

For the second year in a row, the Connetquot Public Library has invited the police department and the local fire department to our Touch a Truck program, a special event that allows children to explore a fire truck and a police car. Families had the opportunity to meet local first responders and learn what they do to keep our communities safe. Last year’s event entitled, Touch a Fire Truck, Touch a Police Car, brought over 200 people.

On the morning of Saturday, September 14, children waited with anticipation as the fire truck and police car arrived. Members of Ronkonkoma’s Lakeland Fire Department included Chief Gary Cisek, Joe McCourt, and Brian Kelly who prepared the vehicles for our “junior chiefs.” Children donned their hats, as they took the helm in the driver’s seat, then dutifully inspected the equipment, even trying on some of the gear. Although the gear may have been a tad too large, the children’s hand-on experience helps them to understand the importance of fire safety and the vital role of our volunteer firefighters.

Police Officer Delfina Rivera, Community Liaison Officer of the Fifth Precinct showed children the inner workings of the police vehicle. From the lights to the sound of children’s voices over the radio, they had fun while also learning about the essential role law enforcement plays in our community. Officer Rivera brought some valuable items and literature for parents and children to take home. These visits are instrumental in fostering relationships and community engagement in a safe and enjoyable setting.

Many photographs were taken to commemorate the experiences of our young members. Started by Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira, this program accomplishes other goals such as forging bonds, building bridges, and accumulating great memories. Children’s Librarian Sue Britton, Library Assistant Nathalie Morvan, and Teen Volunteer Madison Holzmacher helped in making the event a great success. We thank members of the Lakeland Fire Department and Officer Rivera for their participation, as well as their continued and exceptional dedication to public service.

There was no better way to begin the day, as over 230 parents and children shared in this exciting event. After the program, children were encouraged to stop in the library for police and fire vehicle coloring pages. As we remain steadfast in our mission to enrich your mind, explore your world, we begin with our community and a partnership in education through events and classes. Let us help you and your children learn more about first responders and all the heroes that change our lives each and every day.
