Online Petition Started For Sidewalk On West Hartsdale Avenue

HARTSDALE, NY — Greenburgh town officials think now is the time to seek funding for a long-standing goal — a sidewalk on West Hartsdale Avenue.

A sidewalk would enable people to walk or bicycle safely between Solomon Schecter, Maria Regina, Woodlands High School, Poets Corner, local neighborhoods and the Hartsdale train station, business district and Central Avenue, said Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner.

The time is right because New York State's new budget significant dollars for local infrastructure projects, he said. So state lawmakers such as Sen. and Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins and Assemblyman Tom Abinanti need to see the widespread community support for safe pedestrian access to local businesses and amenities.

Therefore, town officials have created an online petition, Feiner told Patch.

Town officials think the benefits are obvious:

• Reducing pedestrian fatalities
• Providing safe alternatives for residents relying on mass transit
• Encouraging cyclists and pedestrians to have a safe alternative to get to work
• .An increase in home values due to stronger viability of mixed-use corridors

They estimate that the cost would be around $2.3 million.

"This sidewalk would make an enormous quality of life difference to many residents, students and businesses," Feiner said.

Over the past five years the town has committed significant resources and built miles of new sidewalks. "We will continue to build more sidewalks around the entire town each year," he said.
