Scarsdale Small Business Spotlight: Kangs Martial Arts
Our small business series shines a light on local business owners in the community.

Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community. And that’s the belief behind this exciting series we’ve kicked off at Patch — to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.
- Business: Kangs Martial Arts
- Owners: Jason Christian and Jason Kim
- Website: Kangsma.com
- Address: 455 Central Park Avenue, Scarsdale
How did you come up with the name?
We came up with the name by taking over the business from previous owner Grandmaster Ik Jo Kang. We kept the Kang part in honor of our teacher Master Kang he is a true martial artist who puts students, the martial arts, and community first.

Why start a business in this town?
We started a business in this town because both owners grew up in Westchester and we know it well! We’ve taught for other schools in the area and have grown and have helped others grow in martial arts. Specifically Scarsdale has many families and children who can benefit from Martial Arts training we feel that the local community has much to gain from what we have to offer!

What business are you in?
We are in the anti-bully, self-defense, fitness, body and mind development business! More specifically we teach the Martial Arts of Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do.
What’s the most difficult challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?
Everyday we face challenges such as sacrificing our own family time, lack of sleep due to putting our heart and sweat into only the business, but we see that as opportunity! We are in the business of helping people overcome challenges in their own lives, such as confidence building, becoming more fit and healthy, children overcoming a lack of attention, or self esteem. We face challenges just like any other business but if we can’t conquer our own then we can’t teach others to face their everyday challenges!
What’s been your proudest achievement since opening?
Our proudest achievement since opening is our school being honored with “best school award” in our first tournament! The students shined and did their very best and continue to improve every class.
How does your business give back to the community?
Our business gives back to the community by offering free one day courses to all schools in the Scarsdale and Edgemont School district! We are just starting to venture into fundraising events for charities such as St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital!
