Thousands Attend Annual 'Making Strides Against Breast Cancer' Walk

More than $1.2 million was raised in an effort to create a world free of the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society projects that 20,000 residents came together on Sunday, Oct. 16 at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, for the 22nd Annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and raised more than $1.2M to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer.

“Today’s event was a moving example of passion in action,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Manager for the Society. “Our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk ensures no one faces breast cancer alone by bringing the community together, funding innovative breast cancer research, promoting education and risk reduction and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.”

While significant progress in the fight against breast cancer has been made, more needs to be done. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, other than skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2016, an estimated 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer (16,360 in N.Y.) and 40,450 will die from the disease this year (2,410 in N.Y.).
