17th Annual Smith Point Light Show Returns This Year

Despite the many events canceled due to the pandemic, there's good news in Shirley: The Smith Point Light Show will go on this December.

SHIRLEY, NY — Despite a long list of beloved events canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, there's good news in Shirley — the 17th Annual Smith Point Light Show will return this year.

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that the drive-thru event at Smith Point County Park, which features more than a mile of illuminated holiday-themed displays, will kick off on December 1 and run through December 30.

A favorite holiday attraction for families and communities, the event is also a critical fundraiser, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County representatives explained.

“The Smith Point Light Show is one of our biggest events each year, and we know this event is more important than ever,” Pamela Mastrota, chief executive officer and president of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County said. “Families are looking for safe, socially distanced entertainment options, and we are delighted to be able to continue this holiday tradition."

Like so many nonprofits and businesses, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County program has been negatively impacted by the pandemic, and the Smith Point Light Show remains a "strong source" of fundraising for Scouts, Mastrota said, adding that proceeds benefit girl leadership programs as well as provide financial assistance for girls to join Girl Scouting and attend the summer camp program.

Since outgrowing its space at Camp Edey in Bayport in 2016, the holiday event has been held at Smith Point County Park, a release said.

The light displays are assembled and built, in part, by GSSC staff, as well as volunteers from PSEG Long Island, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049 and Local 25, and the Long Island Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, GSSC said.

“The annual light show is an entertaining spectacle that brings our residents and visitors together for a great cause during the holiday season,” said Bellone.

The show welcomed nearly 50,000 guests last year, he added.

Tickets went on sale Monday; pricing is as follows: Special pre-sale price of $20/car from October 5 through November 30; $22/car for online purchases beginning December 1, and $25/car at the show’s entrance. No cash accepted; credit cards only.
