SHIRLEY, NY — A new Aldi supermarket got the green light Thursday to open its doors in Shirley.

According to Councilman Dan Panico, plans for the new Aldi, which is slated to be located in the Floyd Harbor Retail Center, located at 855 Montauk Highway, where there is also an Applebee's, were unanimously approved by the Brookhaven Town Zoning Board of Appeals.

"Aldi’s approval is further recognition of fact that there is significant interest in the Mastic-Shirley community," Panico said.

The new stores on Long Island are part of an over $5 billion investment in nationwide growth to update existing Aldi stores and to open hundreds of new locations across the country, the supermarket chain has said. This summer, the chain opened more than 2,000 stores and announced plans to open about 70 new stores by the end of the year.

"Long Island is an important market for us," Chris Daniels, South Windsor division vice president for Aldi has said. "Opening new stores and providing even more customers access to healthy, low-price groceries has always been one of our top priorities, and it's more critical now than ever before. While food costs are rising across the country, our Long Island stores offer prices that are significantly lower than the competition."
