Latest Zombie House Bites The Dust In Mastic Beach

The first razed home in 2019 follows 67 demolitions of eyesores in 2018 in Brookhaven. Which houses would you like to see torn down next?

MASTIC BEACH, NY — Another unsightly zombie house in Mastic Beach bit the dust recently.

On Wednesday, Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico and Supervisor Ed Romaine were present for the town’s first “zombie house” demolition of 2019. The house, located on environmentally sensitive wetlands at 9 Montauk Drive in Mastic Beach, had been vacant for many years and had become a dilapidated, blighted and dangerous eyesore in the neighborhood, officials said.

The land was cleared of all debris and will be preserved as open space by the town.

The demolition followed the razing of 67 vacant and abandoned houses covering all districts in Brookhaven Town.

“The quality of life suffers in a neighborhood when people have to live near a house like this one," Romaine said. "We will continue to crack down on property owners who do not maintain their vacant houses and we will demolish them if necessary, especially those that are on wetlands. Thanks to the work of our law department, we continue to make great progress in our effort to clean up the town.”

Panico added: “The people of Mastic Beach know the difference between rhetoric and results. They know the difference between pandering and producing. This work will continue until all such homes are down.”
