Suffolk Police Investigate Man’s Shooting In Mastic Beach

Detectives are now investigating if a driver, who drove away from a police officer investigating the shooting, was involved, police said.

MASTIC BEACH, NY — A man was shot in the leg in Mastic Beach on Thursday night, said Suffolk police who are investigating if a driver who fled a nearby traffic stop, as well as passengers in the car, were involved.

Police said the man was struck in the leg “by a gunshot” outside of a home on Parkwood Drive at about 7:42 p.m., and he was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The man’s name was not released by police.

In a second nearby incident, just right after the shooting, a car crashed in the northbound lane of William Floyd Parkway at Moriches Middle Island Road in Shirley just before 8 p.m.

A police spokeswoman said that a 7th Precinct officer tried to stop a car at about 7:48 p.m. at the intersection of Mastic Beach Road and Mastic Road in Mastic Beach as part of the shooting investigation. The car’s driver drove the car away from the officer, and it collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Moriches Middle Island Road and William Floyd Parkway at about 7:50 p.m., police said.

No one was seriously injured in the crash, according to police.

The car's driver, whose name has not been rekleaswe as charged with third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle and reckless driving, police said. The driver was additionally charged with endangering the welfare of a child because there was a teen in the car at the time of the crash, according to police.

"It is under investigation if the occupants of the vehicle were involved in the shooting incident," a police spokeswoman wrote in an email.

The incidents were two of three that kept police and emergency personnel busy over a period of a couple hours on Thursday.

In an incident from earlier in the evening, five people were arrested on disorderly conduct charges after a fight broke out on Atlantic Avenue in Bellport, police said. Police said the fight was between two families and was unrelated to the other two incidents. It is not clear if anyone was injured. No further information was immediately available.
