Motorcyclist Killed In Fiery Suffolk Crash

Suffolk County police said two motorcyclists were involved in a crash in Mastic.

MASTIC, NY — A motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Suffolk County Tuesday night, police said.

Suffolk County police said the crash happened at 8:21 p.m. in Mastic at the intersection of Mastic Road and Eleanor Avenue. A Manorville woman was driving a 2006 Jeep Liberty south on Mastic Road and made a left turn onto Eleanor Avenue in the path of two motorcyclists driving north, police said. Bernard Lafayette, 31, of Mastic, was driving his motorcycle ahead of the second motorcyclist, identified as a 35-year-old from Mastic.

Police said Lafayette crashed into the Jeep and the other man fell off his motorcycle, which crashed into Lafayette's motorcycle. The motorcycles caught fire.

Lafayette was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue and pronounced dead. The other motorcyclist suffered minor injuries and was transported to the same hospital for treatment. The driver of the Jeep and a passenger were not injured, police said.

The Jeep and motorcycles were impounded for safety checks; anyone with information on the crash is asked to call detectives at the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
