SHIRLEY, NY— Sonic fans, rejoice: If you're hankering for tater tots and a shake, not to mention mouthwatering burgers and hot dogs, good news. A new Sonic Drive-In is planned for the Shirley Shopping Plaza on Montauk Highway.
According to Brookhaven Town Councilman Michael Loguercio Jr., the 2,707 square ft. space where Sonic will be sited is located in the northwest corner of the plaza; the eatery is expected to have 36 indoor seats as well as outdoor service.
The plans, he said, were given the green light by the board of zoning appeals; no town board approval was needed as there was no change of zone needed. Next steps include going out to bid and construction, Loguercio said.

The community, he said, has been "supportive. Sonic has a good name. People want it, and support this. I can't wait."
Other Sonic Drive-Ins, located in East Meadow and Nesconset, opened in 2017. The restaurant is known for its roller-skating wait staff and car-side service. It offers 1950s diner-style fair, with burgers, hot dogs, corn dogs and milkshakes. Sonic also has restaurants in North Babylon and Valley Stream.
