Plane Makes Emergency Landing On LI Beach

The plane lost power, park police say.

SHIRLEY, NY — A pilot made an emergency landing on the beach at Smith Point County Park on Sunday.

The plane, which was pulling a banner, lost power in the afternoon, according to Suffolk County Park Police Sgt. Jeff Campo.

"The pilot was able to land it safely on the outer beach," he said.

The plane landed just west of Moriches Inlet, between Cut 2 and 3, at Smith Point, Campo said.

Campo said while he believes the plane might be a Cessna, the make and model hasn't yet been positively identified.

On Monday, the plan is to remove the wings, drain the fuel, and remove the plane from the beach with a truck, Campo said.

No one was injured during, he said.
