Last June, Jon Trask, a retired William Floyd Middle School music teacher, purchased and donated ukulele kits and delivered them to Sharon Smith’s life skills classes at William Floyd Middle School. Together with the students, Mr. Trask and Mrs. Smith spent a few days building, painting and decorating the ukuleles. When they were completed, some of the students took their newly crafted ukuleles to their general music classes and learned how to play them, which led to some very creative musical performances.

“It was such an awesome experience! They sanded the raw wood together, and Mr. Trask assembled them, painted them the colors that the kids chose and brought them back for my kids to decorate,” said Mrs. Smith. “Then he, along with Mr. Dignam (WFMS general music teacher), taught the students how to play them. The kids were so excited when they got to bring home their very own ukulele!”
