Two WFHS Girls’ Varsity Track Athletes Run State-Qualifying Times

The William Floyd Colonials girls’ varsity cross country team led by head coach John Ryan is coming off of an impressive performance at the St. Anthony's Cross Country Invitational this past Friday, October 4, at Sunken Meadow State Park. Seventh grader Zariel Macchia (William Floyd Middle School) and sophomore Alanis Gonzalez who finished in first- and second-place, respectively, for the Lady Colonials led the team at this invitational. Rounding out the scoring were sophomore Alaysia Cobb, senior Melanie Martinez and freshman Aaliyah Jordan. Zariel's time of 20:04.08 and Alanis's time of 22:20.23 qualify them automatically as individuals for the Section XI State Qualifier meet at Sunken Meadow State Park on November 8. Both Alanis and Zariel have running exceptionally well this year. Zariel, who is undefeated in League I competition, is currently the No. 1 ranked seventh grader in the United States in both the 1.5-mile and 2,400-meter cross country runs. She also was the overall female winner in the Smith Point Bridge 5K Run for Literacy held in early September.
