The William Floyd Colonials girls’ varsity cross country team recently swept the Suffolk County Freshman/Sophomore Championship meet, a showcase of the best runners in Suffolk County who are eligible to run at either the freshman or sophomore levels. Seventh grader Zariel Macchia (William Floyd Middle School) took home the gold in the freshman race, completing the 2.8 mile course in a time of 17:46 (6:20 pace), and sophomore Alanis Gonzalez captured the sophomore title winning with a time of 18:20 (6:33 pace).
According to head coach John Ryan, this is only the second time in at least 10 years that the county champion in both races comes from the same school. Freshman Aaliyah Jordan placed 11th overall in a time of 20:31 (7:19 pace). Eve Hadzikostas and Linda Lin rounded out the Colonials’ freshman runners placing 27th and 35th respectively. Sophomore Alaysia Cobb placed 6th overall in the sophomore race with a time of 19:18 (6:54 avg. mile pace). Nicole Pinkosh finished the sophomore race at a 21:49 clip (7:47 avg. mile pace) placing 31st.
Zariel Macchia and Alanis Gonzalez were selected to the All-League First Team. All-Division and All-County awards will be determined this weekend at the state qualifying tournaments.
