The William Floyd Colonials girls’ varsity tennis team is off to another great start opening the season 6-1 (3-0 in League play). Led by legendary high school tennis coach Dave Pia, a two-time United States Tennis Association Coach of the Year, the Colonials are in position to secure a playoff berth for the 17th consecutive year. After dropping their season opener, the Colonials have won six straight.

“The hard work over the summer has given us a slight edge in the beginning of the season,” said Coach Pia, referring to the efforts that his team puts in over the summer and throughout the year. “However, the division is very competitive and we must maintain our focus and continue to improve if we want to have a successful year.”

This year’s squad returns seven players from last year’s team including first singles player Alyssa Drell, who as a junior earned All-County honors and was an All-State runner-up. Saskia DaSilva, who was All-Division last year, anchors the second singles position. Coach Pia said both are working hard and continuing to improve their tennis fundamentals. Cassidy Conway, Casey Musselman, Natalie Schwab, Daniella Farrauto and Gabriela Cataldo will also be playing singles this year. The doubles line-up includes Amanda Jones, Chandni Patel, Lindsey Boocock, Isabella Saladin, Sophia Johnson and Hailey O’Connor.

“Our goals this year are always the same – show dedication and commitment, improve our tennis fundamentals and strive to make the playoffs,” added Coach Pia.

The Colonials have eight games remaining on the schedule – including seven league matches.
