William Floyd High School principal Philip Scotto has been named the “2020 Man of the Year” by The Chamber of Commerce of the Mastics and Shirley for his efforts in helping William Floyd High School succeed and his love for the district and community. He will be honored at a dinner on April 27, 2020 at the Mill Pond Golf & Catering Club in Medford, NY.

In his role as principal, Mr. Scotto serves as the instructional and administrative leader of the high school and supervises more than 2,800 students in grades nine through 12, and more than 200 faculty members and 125 professional staff.

He first joined the William Floyd School District in 1984 as an English teacher; later serving as the department chairperson from 1998 until his retirement in 2013, before returning in 2014 as the director of the English Department (grades six through 12). Then after a year off, he rejoined William Floyd as a high school assistant principal, before taking the reins as the principal during the 2016 school year.

Prior to William Floyd, Mr. Scotto began his distinguished career as a parochial school teacher for 10 years with stints at Our Lady of Angels (Diocese of Brooklyn), where he taught all subjects for students in grades six through eight for six years. He also served as a high school English teacher at the St. John Villa Academy in Staten Island (Archdiocese of New York) for two years and served another two years at St. Thomas Aquinas in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Mr. Scotto is a graduate of St. John’s University with a BA in English and Social Studies; earned his MA in Reading Instruction (Specialist in Reading) at St. John’s University; and his SAS/SDA administrative certifications from the College of New Rochelle.

Mr. Scotto’s grandfather built a house in Mastic Beach in 1946, and as a kid, he spent each summer of his life in Mastic Beach, where he forged a love for this community.

On being named the “Man of the Year” by the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Scotto said that he is honored to have been selected and that this award is a validation of the work that he has done throughout his career. “It’s an honor to contribute to the community,” he said, adding, “A good school district improves the community.”
