The students read an article about children who are born with cleft lips and palates and decided they wanted to help.

Third-grade students in Christopher Tavolaro’s class at Tangier Smith Elementary School recently raised and donated $280 to support Smile Train, a non-profit organization and charity that provides free corrective surgery for children born with cleft lips and palates, and also provides training to local doctors in 87 countries across the world.

The students read an article about children who are born with cleft lips and palates and decided they wanted to help. So, as a class, they wrote persuasive letters to their families in hopes to raise money for the cause. In just three days, with additional contributions from Mr. Tavolaro and principal Toni Komorowski, the class collected and donated $280.
Mr. Tavolaro, who is so proud of his class, added, “The children got to be part of making a real life difference for some children that are born into a terribly unfortunate circumstance.”
